Hydroseeding Mulch and Tackifier Slurry Calculator

Calculate hydroseeding slurry components per acre, including seed, mulch, tackifier and water, for a uniform erosion-control application.

How This Calculation Works

Seed pounds per acre equals the target live seeds per acre divided by seeds per pound, then divided by the pure live seed fraction. Mulch is applied at 1,500 to 2,000 pounds per acre for slope protection, and tackifier at 40 to 60 pounds per acre. Water is the carrier and is not counted as a dry component.

Common Questions

How much mulch do I use for hydroseeding?

Apply 1,500 to 2,000 pounds of wood or paper mulch per acre for erosion control, with higher rates on steep slopes. Mulch protects the seed and holds moisture. A bonded fiber matrix may be needed on very steep ground.

What is tackifier and how much do I need?

Tackifier is a binding agent that holds the mulch and seed in place against wind and rain. Apply 40 to 60 pounds per acre, more on slopes. It is added last in the mixing sequence.

In what order do I mix a hydroseeding slurry?

Add water first, then mulch, then seed, then tackifier, keeping the tank agitated throughout. This order prevents clumping and ensures even distribution. Never add seed before the mulch is fully wetted.

How much water does hydroseeding need?

Water is the carrier and typically makes up the bulk of the slurry, often 1,000 to 1,500 gallons per acre. The exact volume depends on the tank and the mulch rate. Water is not counted as a dry component in the rate math.
